Chromium layers of high thickness used for engineering purposes is termed as HARD CHROME PLATING. The properties of hard chrome plating which render it of most value for engineering purpose are its intrinsic hardness which is between 60 to 65 HRC and its low co-efficient of friction and high wear resistance.
Hard Chrome Plating is an effective treatment for a variety of metals. Hardness of deposit (1100-1250 H.V.) giving greater wear resistance. Whilst micro-cracking (>300cm-1) improves corrosion resistance.
Coatings can be applied to customer specification and requirements. For heavier deposits i.e. approx. 0.5mm, it is advisable, if possible, to capture the ends of the component being plated to reduce the chance of "chipping" of edge build up.
